All travelers to Papua New Guinea should use a high degree of caution. Make sure you have comprehensive travel insurance and be sure to check what circumstances and activities are covered/not covered by your policy. Upon arriving in Papua New Guinea, travelers should register with their Embassy or Consular Office. For Current Travel Warnings and Travel Advisories check out: http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_996.html or http://www.fco.gov.uk/en/travelling-and-living-overseas/travel-advice-by-country/

The Solomon Islands and Vanuatu are both great alternatives.

What's the current security situation in Papua New Guinea? Would love to head out there but stories of tourist kidnappings and the unsafe situation in Port Moresby last year put me off. I've heard that the nearby Solomon Islands are a good alternative. Fantastic wreck-diving spots (wreckage of WWII planes, ships, even tanks litter the seabed).
