Thanks for the infos.
The trip planner site looks interesting and I'll give it a further check now. I worked as a travel agent for many years, so I know how special this topic is and how many different varities there are...

I would always suggest to get many different informations. That would mean internet, airline & travel agencies. You just can't say in advance what's best.

I'm sure that a website gives you a good first information there, but as a round the world trip is not a everydays trip, I would advice to get some infos in person at the end.

Everyone who is on a rtw trip... enjoy it! Everyone who is planning to do so: Enjoy it, too! :)

Greetings

Melvin

You're both right in that the airlines do have RTW fares, and they are complex. There's a slew of problems booking round the world tickets with the airlines though. One problem is they are almost too complex. Fares can, and will, go up whenever the airlines want to raise them. Currently they're about 20-30% more expensive than consolidators like AirTreks can get them for.

Not to mention, who really wants to deal with airline agents? They're about as fun to talk to as a zucchini. That you can get tickets at a reduced cost, have fun with your booking experience and have people like those at AirTreks around to give you help and advice, why on earth would you go to the airlines?

Some decent points there. We are in Australia and it's a bit of a different game here. We have some specials people can get and i.e. the swiss airlines round the world http://www.roundabouttravel.com.au/info/airfare_deals/deals/swiss_airlines_rtw which gives some really cool routes if you are ok to do your own internal fares. Lufthansa, Air NZ, Virgin and Finn Air also have basic round the worlds for those of us down in the South Pacific.

I think the bigger thing to understand with more complex RTW trips though is the airline alliances that make up the more complex fares. i.e. oneworld, Star Alliance, Skyteam. anyway, lots to it. i think my biggest advice is to start with where you want to go and to come up with 2 lists....a 'must do' and a 'would be nice to' list of destinations. then work with an expert like at AirTreks in North America or RoundAbout Travel in Australia and then get their advice on how to maximise your value.

I've done two RTW trips and learned that the airlines have "RTW desks" devoted to this type of travel. One trip was mostly NWA/KLM, the other American Airlines and other OneWorld partners - Quantas, Cathay Pacific, Iberia, etc. Great time on both - no problems.
