Kick Back in Dahab

Submitted by on March 18, 2009 – 6:31 pmNo Comment

In Arabic, Dahab means “gold.”  However, in the Sinai, it means sparkling clear turquoise seas, golden sand and off beat cafe life. Dahab, Egypt boasts spectacular beauty both on land and under water. The sight of the mountains of Sinai dropping right down to the sea is almost as breathtaking as the colorful fish and coral formations you see under water. Originally a Bedouin fishing village, Dahab is one of the Sinai’s most treasured diving destinations.  It is also world-renowned for its windsurfing because of the reliable winds that provide outstanding flat water conditions. There are many reefs immediately adjacent to the waterfront hotels and a famous Blue Hole for diving located about 5 miles from town.

One of our favorite things about Dahab is the unique on-the-ground restaurants, a mixture of Hippie and Bedouin styles developed over several decades. Large cushions and low tables are placed next to the sea and decorated with colorful cloths. Most of these restaurants have fish stalls in front where you can pick the fish of your choice and have it prepared however you’d like. The food is delicious and quite affordable. After you finish your food, just lean back in the cushions and rest for as long as you’d like.

The Bedouin village of Assalah to the north is where, historically, most visitors have been backpackers traveling independently. Assalah, a sprawling assortment of palm trees, shops, campgrounds, hotels, bars and restaurants lies along the shore of Ghazala Bay and has a distinctly bohemian feel. Attracting a very different type of traveler is the less laid back, but still relaxed area just south along El-Qura Bay. Here you’ll find upscale luxury holiday villages and dive centers. Dahab has excellent hotel accommodations, more affordable accommodation in the village and camping. The small hotels, along with the Bedouin cafes and souk, are spread around Assalah Bay and close to the ancient lighthouse.  The hotel chain properties run the length of the beach 2km to the south. We recommend staying at the Penguin Village which can be booked through Hostelworld.

Still haven’t managed to get up there yet to dive the ‘Blue Hole’. Hopefully, I’ll get there this year.

Went there in the early 1990s…it was a fantastic time. Maybe the Beduin names Attiah is still there…he was a cool dude we hung out with…
