We went to PEI just before they built the Confederation Bridge. Even then, the best way to experience the island I read about in Maud Hart Lovelace's "Anne" books was to get away from the major cities and tourist attractions.
I remember walking though the "Haunted Woods" and stumbling out onto a golf course! But getting away to places like West Point or little isolated towns gave me the very real feeling of being where "Anne" and Maud herself lived and worked...and of the PEI they loved.
Some of our favorite PEI memories were staying at the lighthouse inn at West Point and attending a ceilidh (Celtic "house party" with singing, fiddling and dancing)

After 37 years, 206 cities in 19 countries, I finally made it to Prince Edward Island....which is only a four hour drive away from where I'm currently living!

Prince Edward Island is such a fascinating place to visit, whether you are interested in early Canadian history; lighthouses and ghost ships; ecology; sailing and kayaking; beaches; gorgeous scenery; and, of course, Anne of Green Gables. For a special Anne-tour of PEI and hints on visiting PEI "from away," go to http://www.inglesideimpressions.com.

Great post. I'm going to show it to my Mom in the hope that it will inspire her to become a guest writer for No Crowds. Thanks for the info. Prince Edward Island sounds like the perfect No Crowds destination.
