Spend Your Spring Break Making a Difference

ecuador_kidsIf you have yet to confirm your Spring Break plans or if your seeking alternative plans due to the current situation throughout Mexico, there is still an opportunity to be a part of Project Ecuador. A true cultural immersion, this experience is comprised of a hands on volunteer project in the coastal community of Rio Muchacho. Participants spend 4 days helping out local people on an organic farm, at the local primary school and in the community. This is a unique adventure and an opportunity to give back to the community that is home to some of the best sites in Ecuador.

After spending the first night in Quito at a simple hotel, participants take a morning flight to the Ecuadorian coast and travel to Bahía de Caráquez, known as Ecuador’s eco-city. Enjoy an afternoon city tour including panoramic lookout points, the local market and Bahia’s oldest resident Miguelito, the 96 year old Galapagos turtle. The next 4 days are spent volunteering in the community of Rio Muchacho with time spent helping out on the organic farm, assisting at the primary school and helping with community development projects. ecu3Activities on the farm may include planting and harvesting crops, maintaining vegetable gardens, composting, weeding, nursery work and reforestation. Other activities may include working alongside community members to build/refurbish buildings and homes or spending time interacting with the children at the local school through the organization of soccer matches, educational games, arts & crafts, and teaching basic English. Optional activities include a guided tour of the farm, making handicrafts from local materials, horseback riding to see the howler monkeys, swimming at the waterfalls or learning to prepare chocolate from the bean to the dessert.

Accommodation at Rio Muchacho is in a cabin by the stream or in one of the other creatively built sleeping areas. The best of typical food is prepared from the harvest and cooked over an open fire. Currently, there is still availability for this 8 day trip departing on the following dates: March 8, March 15, March 22, March 29, April 5, April 12 and April 19.
