BrilliantTips and #FollowFriday on Twitter

Submitted by Rich on June 26, 2009 – 12:36 pmNo Comment

brillianttips-and-twitterSeeing our followers take time out of their day to drop us a Follow Friday mention is very flattering and I can assure you that everyone here is genuinely appreciative of every single Follow Friday mention that comes across Twitter. However, I must admit that I’m a bit bored with Follow Friday on Twitter these days as it seems to consist of endless tweets chock full of tweeps that are recommending other tweeps to follow for one reason or another. Then these lists get retweeted and retweeted and retweeted.

Therefore, we’re going to change it up a bit. For the next month, @BrilliantTips will participate in Follow Friday on Twitter by tweeting and retweeting the best travel tweets from our favorite travel tweeps from the previous week and tag them as #followfriday. In addition, with the exception of this post, we will not send out a single tweet with a link of our own on Fridays. Just our favorite travel tweets from travel tweeps that we recommend following as well as our own conversational tweets.

  • Hey, not a bad idea. I just might have to follow with a similar strategy.

I am on the same page as you. I love getting #FollowFriday recommendations, but I am a bit bored with reading other people’s recommendations. There are just too many of them to keep up with anyway.

I totally agree with your take on #followfriday. That’s a great idea. I’ve tried various things to mix it up a bit and settled for just a few #ff tweets of my own and a few RTs but I’m kinda bored with that. I just might follow your lead or come up with something similar.

    Cheers,
    Keith

  • I always try to ‘pack’ #followfriday with some topic-related tweeps, like biz-minded people or bloggers or some other experts. It makes it more readable for the followers and helps them decide if they want to check out these guys or not.

Great idea! I try to give a reason for every #Follow Friday recommendation I offer. I don’t just #FF someone in return because they have recommended me. I believe Twitter is all about REtweeting and spreading good information. The Gold Star REtweeters are the ones that make my list.

  • Melvin says:

Yes, you are completely right. Sure you want to recommend other tweeters, but the lists gets longer & longer when you get more followers as you are in contact with more interesting tweeters. But I also think ff gets too much. Now it also starts on #traveltuesday…
It’s not really a following recommendation anylonger as I think a lot of users don’t follow these lists. So it’s more like a thank you.

I’ll go with your idea… until Keith might find another solution, too. :) Then I’ll go with both ideas! :)

  • Interesting how people’s perspectives change over time. I’m still new enough to Twitter that I am enjoying the plain old #FF shotgun approach.

But I can easily see how in a few weeks I’ll probably want to refine my process. Thanks for offering up some suggestions on how I can handle that when the time comes.
