I always made little flash cards for myself, a couple of years ago I got the idea of recording some I got off the web and put them on my Ipod. It carries so much info that having a playlist labeled 'turkish" while traveling to Turkey, can be good, even if it's just a few basic things, like "Where is the bathroom?" or "Driver, can we stop at a liquor store on the way to the hotel?"
