What an amazing, well-written post! I love Turkey, I've been there like 7 times, and I absolutely agree that Turkish people make the best salesmen in the world. Once you wind up in their shop, enjoying a tiny yet super flavorful cup of coffee, you WILL buy something just to please the hearty and welcoming host who's been already sweet-talking you for hours...

Turkey has been on my list of places I really want to visit for quite some time now. But I have been reading more and more lately, and it's been steadily moving up near the top of my list. Can't wait to visit for myself one day.

I've spent a lot of time in Istanbul, and known people who lived there for several years. None of them, nor their native friends, knew why the Medusa heads were upside down.

We did think it was something to do with taking away her extreme power, however, and this is backed up by Wiki: 'The origin of the two heads is unknown, though it is thought that the heads were brought to the cistern after being removed from a building of the late Roman period. Tradition has it that the blocks are oriented sideways and inverted in order to negate the power of the Gorgons' gaze.'

Istanbul is my favorite city in the world. There is so much to do and see there that it's hard to capture in a single blog post or trip, I agree. One place that all tourists should visit is Hagia Sofia - a remarkable piece of architecture. To see the church paintings underneath the walls of the mosque is truly impressive and is a reflection of Istanbul, a blending of cultures.
