Creepy Places Around the World

Submitted by Chris on October 27, 2009 – 9:40 pm8 Comments

The world is full of places where the restless spirits of the night linger. Paranormal activity knows no borders and they manifest as eerie voices and creep out of the shadows as apparitions. We have omitted the more familiar sights, like the Tower of London, the Catacombs in Paris and various places throughout New Orleans and Edinburgh, not because their tales of strange and terrifying experiences with the phantom world are any less spooky, but because we simply wanted to share some lesser known places that have a truly unnerving reputation.

Sedlec-Ossuary2

The Church of Bones: Located in Kutna Hora, a town in the Bohemia region of the Czech Republic just a short train ride away from Prague, is the Sedlec Ossuary (Kostnice Sedlec); also known as the Church of Bones. The small chapel was constructed in 1511 to house the bones from abolished graves and is estimated to contain the skeletons of between 40,000 and 70,000 people. hill-of-crosses-2

The Hill of Crosses: Standing on a small hill in northern Lithuania close to the Latvian border are hundreds of thousands of crosses that represent Christian devotion and a memorial to Lithuanian national identity. The beginnings of this extraordinary hill are shrouded in mystery as no one is certain how or why this hill became a monument to Christ and to the Lithuanian nation. fengdu

The Chinese Realm of the Dead: Fengdu, China, is a lovely little town situated on the northern bank of the Yangtze river between Zhongxian and Fuling. Yet, as lovely as it is, Fengdu is said to be the abode of devils. Fengdu is home to 75 Buddha and Tao temples along with many statues that are spread over much of Ming Mountain. In the “spirit world,” there are a series of superhuman beings in the temples each having their own responsibilities in guarding the spirit world. Read more…

giger-bar-11

The Giger Bar: The Giger Bar is a bar themed and modeled by H. R. Giger, a Swiss surrealist painter, sculptor, and set designer who won a Visual Effects Academy Award for his design work on the film Alien. Built under Giger’s close personal supervision, the bar reflects his original concept of a representation of human bodies and machines in a cold, interconnected relationship described as “biomechanical.” With the cavernous, skeletal structure covered by double arches of vertebrae that crisscross the vaulted ceiling, patrons of the bar get the sensation of being in the belly of a futuristic beast. hollywood-forever

The Hollywood Forever Cemetery: The Hollywood Forever Cemetery is the final resting place for many of the greats of Hollywood’s Golden Age. There have been many paranormal sightings over the years along with reports of chilling “cold spots.” Forgotten actress Virginia Rappe is said to often be seen weeping near her grave and Rudolph Valentino has been seen near his crypt. I love these places. I have been following the series leading up to Hallowe’en and it is great to see them all together. The Church of bones is outrageous.

I think Port Arthur at night is the creepiest tarvel experience I’ve had. It is an old convict settlement. they do night ‘Ghost” tour there – highly recommended

  • Ooh, I love the Giger bar!

Also, the Catacombs in Paris are very creepy. Sure, it’s creepy to walk among thousands and thousands of skeletons and dead bodies in an underground crypt. But, it’s even more creepy thinking about whoever had to dig up the bodies from the cemetary and move them to the catacombs! Glad I don’t have that job!
