I will never forget the approach to Livigno from Switzerland.

North of the border you drive through densely forested Swiss National Park, but soon emerge into the somewhat moon-like landscape of Livigno, where locals cut nearly every tree for warmth during World War 2.

Even the people differ. The locals often have blond hair and blue eyes in contrast even to their neighbors in Switzerland.

I especially recommend Livigno to North Americans who want to get away from the usual tourist scenes--want to get away from crowds of Americans and Canadians.

The most beautiful train route I ever experienced was from Tirano, in a wine-growing valley near Livigno, to Chur in Switzerland. Simply outstanding.
