Many thanks. Way back in 1975 when I went to Portugal from Canada I traveled via TAP. They stopped in the Azores 'to pick up pineapples' as a fellow traveler told me. This was my first solo travel as well as my first international trip. I was living in Edmonton at the time. What an amazing experience it was to get off the plane (in those days there were no ramps; you got off and on out on the tarmac) and step into soft, warm breezes and an inky black night! I saw a bit of the Azores on my return trip when we stopped to pick up immigrants heading to Canada. But I'll never forget the delight of that moist, warm air on my skin after stepping out of a frigid Canadian winter. Those are the experiences you can never anticipate and never adequately describe. The hiking in the Azores is great. I have done a few of the trails in the link you provided and they did not disappoint one bit. There are some nice beaches to visit in the summer months for swimming and all year round for surfing (thanks to the warm water). I am not a diver but I hear it is fantastic.
