Evidencia Light Sta. Catarina Hotel LisbonThe best hostels combine all the necessary travelling basics – bed, lounge, lockers, kitchen – with stunning design and luxury touches. A beautifully designed hostel after a hard day’s travelling or site-seeing relaxes guests and ensures they’ll spread the word and come back again. You can find incredible hostels all over the world, but 5 of the best are found in Marrakesh, Amsterdam, Berlin, Lisbon and of course Gaudi’s city, Barcelona.

Evidencia Light Sta. Catarina Hotel, Lisbon
If you like space and exquisite design, you need the Evidencia Light Sta. Catarina Hotel in Bairro Alto. This trendy cheap Lisbon hotel prides itself on its relaxed and informal atmosphere, helped along by the innovative décor and bright colours – they even have astroturf-topped bar stools. There’s also free wi-fi all over the hotel, a lounge and an outside court garden. All the private 2/3-person rooms have private bathrooms with showers, and each bed in the 14-bed dorm has a locker, a bed curtain and a reading light.    Evidencia Light Sta. Catarina Hotel is right in the middle of the trendy area and you’ll be an easy walk away from the eating, partying and shopping opportunities of Mirador de Santa Catarina and Elevator da Bica.

Barcelona Urbany Hostel

Barcelona Urbany Hostel, Barcelona
Just a 15-minute walk from the Sagrada Familia you’ll find the brand spanking new Barcelona Urbany Hostel. If that doesn’t wow you enough, check out the view from their roof terrace. They also have an on-site fitness club and indoor swimming pool. With 400-beds in a variety of setups from single to 8-bed dorms, the hostel suits all budgets. For the girls there are also ‘Pink Rooms’ where you can indulge in the home comfort and luxury of hair straighteners and hairdryers.  You can save money by cooking in the fully-equipped kitchen and keep in touch with everyone at home with the free computers in the common room. There’s also DVDs, cable TV, a pool table, a Wii and a bar serving cheap food and drinks. Barcelona Urbany Hostel is also the first totally eco-friendly building in Barcelona, with recycling containers, low-consumption lightbulbs and low-energy showers.

Cocomama, Amsterdam
You just know Cocomama will be beautifully designed from standing on the doorstep – it’s housed in a monumental building, complete with high ceilings, chandeliers and huge windows. Round the back – if you need a respite from the city – you’ll find a large, sunny garden to relax in and admire the architecture. You can cook in the fully-equipped kitchen and meet other travellers on the organised activities. Cocomama combines all the great aspects of a hotel with the fun of a hostel. They have free internet, an open atmosphere, a movie corner and a clean, professional and slick attitude. The hostel likes to separate itself from the notorious hostels in the Red Light district as it’s in a more glamorous part of the city, with all the main attractions still within walking distance.

Riad Les Jardins De Mouassine, Marrakesh
For a relaxing stay in Marrakech, you need the Riad Les Jardins De Mouassine. The detail in the room craftsmanship is amazing, with Tadlakt in the bathrooms, Bejamt in the tiles and traditional handwoven material everywhere. Each room is named and has a unique theme, from musical instruments to ceremonial clothing to babouches – the traditional Moroccan slipper. There’s also a patio with a fountain and heaped Berber cushions to lie back and admire the beautiful, authentic exterior.  As well as incredible design the kind and helpful staff help to create a relaxed and easygoing vibe inside the hostel, and if you want to look out over the city you can indulge in the roof terrace. For further rest and relaxation the resident beautician is available for body and hair mud wraps in the hammam, as well as traditional massages with local Algan oils.

Singer109 Apartment – Hostel, Berlin
In the centre of Berlin where the fashionable districts of Mitte, Friedrichshain, Prenzlauer Berg and Kreuzberg meet, you’ll find Singer109 Apartment – Hostel. Located in a restored red brick building you can easily meet other travellers in the glass-enclosed courtyard lounge. They have spacious rooms, mostly with their own bathroom, or shared between two rooms. The lounge and bar is open 24/7, there are free internet counters and a sports field for guests’ use.  You’re just a few minutes from the U-Bahn and staff are helpful and friendly. Most people who stay here say it’s more like a luxury hotel than a hostel.

  • I stayed at Singer 109 in the past and always recommend it to people who visit Berlin. I would’t say it’s a luxury hotel, but definitely a luxury hostel. I’ve never seen anything quite like it! There’s also free buffet breakfast in the morning with amazing stuff and a Wii for the guest’s entertainment :) I really loved this hostel!
