Spain for Foodies – Breakfast

spain breakfast

Some say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day and a big breakfast is the best way to start the day. To me breakfast is without a doubt the best meal of the day.

Like any other meal, breakfast varies among different cultures. Where the English like bacon and beans, the French prefer a Café au lait with a croissant, Germans like Müsli, and the Spanish? Let’s take a closer look at the Spanish breakfast in case you are staying in one of the apartments in Madrid any time soon.

In Spain, breakfast is usually the smallest meal of the day. Many people leave their house without having breakfast to stop at a café before work. A fundamental part of Spanish breakfast is a café con leche. An important detail of the café is that it is strong espresso with lots of milk and foam. Freshly pressed orange juice is also very popular and you won’t find many bars or cafés that don’t have a juicer.

As to the food: The most common thing you will see people eat is some kind of sweet pastry.

A croissant doesn’t need much explanation. It is a popular breakfast food in many parts of the western world.

These are sweet little cupcakes or lady fingers that are excellent to dip into your morning coffee.

This is a very typical Spanish type of food. It is made out of fried dough, similar to a doughnut. It is very common to dip them in your café or hot chocolate.

This is another very typical Spanish breakfast food that you can easily make yourself. It is very similar to French toast. All you need is stale (or lightly toasted) white bread, milk, eggs, sugar and cinnamon. Mix all the ingredients and let the bread soak in it and then you fry it.

The breakfast in Spain is rather simple, but that only means that there is a lot more interesting and delicious things to come for the other meals of the day. In case you want a bigger breakfast and more variety, you can always get everything at the supermarket and prepare your own breakfast if you rent one of the Madrid apartments.
