Boulders Beach and Penguin Colony

boulders-beach-south-africa-signBoulders Beach is located a few kilometers south of Simon’s Town and not far from Cape Town in the Western Cape province of South Africa. It is a popular tourist spot mainly because of a colony of African Penguins that have settled there. Another draw is the fact that the sheltered area is made up of small coves with white sandy beaches and calm shallow waters. Swimmers can actually enjoy the calm waters right alongside the penguin colony. Boulders Beach is one of the only places in the world where you can swim with the penguins. While the penguins are generally not bothered by people, swimmers should avoid harassing them or getting too close as their beaks are sharp and they will peck or bite if they feel threatened. If you’re not swimming, penguin viewing at Boulders Beach is also easily accessible via the boardwalks that traverse the beaches.

Part of the Table Mountain National Park, there is an information center that is managed by South African National Parks.

  • One of my all time favourites spots anywhere. Love it when you are there at nesting time, so many cute little babies.
Swimming with them is great. But like Rich says please do not harass the penguins. I unfortunately have seen this a few times I have been there.

A magical place for sure. Makes me want to be there right now!

Thanks for the article and great pictures.
    Your Journey

  • OH when I go to South Africa I have to go here! I really like penguins, but I do NOT like the cold, so this is perfect!
Did you swim with the penguins?

  • hi annette, no, i did not swim with the penguins. i went there early one morning to kill some time before my flight home. most of the penguins were relaxing on the rocks but a did see a few strays running around.

  • Great article, thanks for sharing. Some people are soooo stupid why would a person want to go harass penguins really makes me so upset. But never the less it is a beautiful beach, and amazing sight if you love penguins.
